Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teaching Credential

This credential option may be offered pending adequate cohort size.

The Department of Education Studies may offer a California Preliminary Education Specialist: Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teaching Credential (DHH) for students applying to the M.Ed./Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Program.

To support the preparation of teachers who can meet the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing children from diverse language and cultural backgrounds, fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required for admission to the DHH option.

The DHH credential also requires one additional quarter of study in the Fall quarter after completion of the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.

Completion of the Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential is required to continue into the additional quarter and complete the required DHH coursework.

Applicants who are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and want to be considered for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing credential option should respond to the relevant question in the online M.Ed./Multiple Subject application and indicate their interest in the program.

Education Studies will review interest levels and determine whether the additional credential option will be offered, pending adequate cohort size.

If offered, this option is available only to candidates in the M.Ed./Multiple Subject Credential pathway.
