FAQ

M.Ed. Multiple Subject & M.Ed. Single Subject Credential programs

Admissions Requirements & Application Questions

What programs do you offer?

M.Ed./Credential program for Multiple Subjects (Elementary Education)

M.Ed./Credential program for Single Subjects (Secondary Education/Middle & High School)

We offer the following Single Subjects:  Math, English, Science, and World Languages

(World Language program is pending adequate co-hort size)

What is the difference between the two programs I can apply to under the Multiple Subjects (MS) and Single Subjects (SS) options (i.e. - MS-1 Summer vs MS-2, or SS-1 vs. SS-2), and which one should I apply to?

The MS-1 Summer & SS-1 options are the longer options as they include the Foundations portion of the program + the Professional Preparation year.  The MS-2 & SS-2 options are the shorter options as they only consist of the Professional Preparation year.  Only UCSD Undergrads who complete the Foundations courses as an undergrad, are eligible to apply directly to the MS-2 & SS-2 options.

Can I apply to the Masters in Education only?  Or the credential only?

No.  All of our Masters/credential programs are combined and they cannot be separated.  If admitted, you will be taking courses for the credential and for the M.ED. throughout the entire program.

Do you offer any online programs?

No.  All of our programs are 100% in person (w/the possible exception of a course or two), and full-time.

Are there any prerequisite courses that I must take prior to applying, or any required fieldwork?

No.  You will take all the courses you need, as well as complete all of the required fieldwork, while in the program.

Is the GRE required?

No.  The GRE is NOT required for our M.Ed./Credential programs.

When does the application open and what is the deadline to apply?

The application usually opens in September each year and the deadline to apply is approximately, during the end of January or start of February of the following year. Please see our website for the exact deadline each year by going to the program you are interested (section admissions): https://eds.ucsd.edu/graduate/masters/index.html

Do you have rolling admissions and start dates?

No.  There is only one application period for all of the programs we offer (early September to late January.  See the Admissions tab under your program for the exact deadline.), as well as one start time.

See below for approximate start dates for each program:

Single Subject 2nd Year: Professional Program

Single Subject 1st Year: Foundations

Multiple Subject Summer Intensive Program

Can I get the application fee waived?

Possibly.  Please see the following page on GEPA’s (UCSD Graduate Division) website for more information:  https://grad.ucsd.edu/admissions/requirements/application-fee-and-fee-waiver/index.html

Can I still apply if I do not have all the admissions requirements completed by the application deadline?

Yes.  However, it is in your best interest to have all the requirements completed by the application deadline, in order to have the best chance of being admitted.

*Note for INTERNATIONAL applicants:  your application will not be able to be moved forward for review if you do not have ALL admissions requirements (listed on the Admissions checklist) completed by the application deadline.  This includes the Certificate of Clearance, and Foreign Transcript Evaluation.

When will I find out if I have been admitted?

Around the end of March, approximately.

General Program Questions

What are the fees/tuition for the M.Ed./Cred. Or MA-ASL programs?

Student Fees/Tuition are subject to change and are based on the Proposed Tuition/Fee Chart of each given year. The information included may be different by the start of the program.

Each chart is designed to give you a total unit count and the approximate full amount of fees expected under your particular program. Our students are expected to be full time students each quarter (Fall, Winter, Spring). During Summer Session, fees are paid by unit. Click here for more details.

A detailed breakdown of the Graduate Student Fees/Tuition can be found here

The Cost of Attendance for Graduate Students can be found here.

Below is a breakdown of the fee structure for each one of our programs. Please note that at any time, fees are subject to change:

Please note:Nonresident Tuition is approximately $5,000 extra per quarter. Summer Session Fees are the same for either category.

What Financial Assistance is available?

View information on financial aid, scholarships, and grants.

What are the programs like (i.e. - what is a typical schedule)?

All of the programs are considered full-time and quite intense.  In both the longer programs and the shorter programs, students take courses as well as have fieldwork at local schools.  During the Foundations portion of the programs, students have a much more varied schedule, as course schedules can vary.  Fieldwork will be during the day, working around your courses.  During the Professional preparation year, the majority of courses will be in the afternoon, and then clinical practice hours will be during the day.

Can I make my own placements/what are placements like?

Students may not make their own placements.

EDS has formed partnerships with school districts throughout San Diego county, focusing on those schools which have a demonstrated record of success for students who are underrepresented in postsecondary education.

These schools are located primarily in urban settings, but also include suburban and rural areas where there are populations of low-income families and/or concentrations of English learners. Our program has long been committed to rigorous education in the service of a social justice and equity, viewing students' home language and cultural experiences as a resource for teaching and learning.  Thus placements are often quite far from the UCSD campus (can be up to 30 miles away). When we set up the year-long site placement, you will have the opportunity to share the area you live in, and we will do our best to place you in the general geographic area.

Our students are placed in both public and charter school settings. All of our lecturers/supervisors are experienced teachers with strong networks in the local educational community.

Can I work while in the program?

Since our programs are full-time, and intense, we do not recommend working while in the program.
