What programs do you offer?

Single Subject areas include math, English, science, and world languages.

World Languages is offered pending adequate cohort size.

What is the difference between the program options under Multiple Subject and Single Subject, and which one should I apply to?

The MS-1 Summer and SS-1 options are the longer pathways. They include the foundations portion of the program plus the professional preparation year. The MS-2 and SS-2 options are shorter and include only the professional preparation year. Only UC San Diego undergraduates who complete the foundations courses as undergraduates are eligible to apply directly to the MS-2 and SS-2 options.

Can I apply to the Master of Education only or the credential only?

No. These are combined M.Ed./Credential programs and cannot be separated. If admitted, you complete coursework for both the credential and the M.Ed. throughout the program.

Do you offer any online programs?

No. These programs are full-time and primarily in person.

Are there any prerequisite courses or required fieldwork before I apply?

No. Students complete required coursework and fieldwork during the program.

Is the GRE required?

No. The GRE is not required for the M.Ed./Credential programs.

When does the application open and when is the deadline?

The application typically opens in September. Deadlines vary by year and program. Review the master’s and credential admissions pages for the current deadline.

Do you have rolling admissions or multiple start dates?

No. There is one application cycle each year and one program start period for each pathway.

Review the admissions information for your program for current dates.

Approximate start times by pathway:

  • Single Subject, Professional Year: June
  • Single Subject, Foundations Year: September
  • Multiple Subject, Summer Intensive: June
  • Multiple Subject, Professional Year: August
  • MA-ASL Program: June
Can I get the application fee waived?

Possibly. Review the UC San Diego Graduate Division application fee and fee waiver page.

Can I still apply if I do not have all admissions requirements completed by the application deadline?

Yes. However, completing all requirements by the deadline gives you the best chance of being admitted.

International applicants: Your application cannot move forward for review unless all admissions requirements on the program checklist are completed by the application deadline. This includes the Certificate of Clearance and foreign transcript evaluation, when required.

When will I find out if I have been admitted?

Admission decisions are typically released around the end of March.

What are the fees and tuition for the M.Ed./Credential or MA-ASL programs?

Fees and tuition are subject to change and are based on the proposed tuition and fee chart for the applicable year.

Summer Session fees are charged by unit. Review the UC San Diego Summer Session tuition and fees page.

Graduate tuition details are available on the UC San Diego Graduate Division tuition and fees page.

Estimated graduate cost of attendance is available on the UC San Diego cost of attendance page.

Fee structure by program:

Nonresident tuition is approximately $5,000 more per quarter. Review UC San Diego residency for tuition purposes.

What is the schedule like?

All programs are full-time and intensive. In both the longer and shorter pathways, students take courses and complete fieldwork in local schools. During the foundations portion, schedules vary based on course offerings, and fieldwork takes place during the day around classes. During the professional preparation year, most courses are in the afternoon and clinical practice takes place during the day.

Can I make my own placement, and what are placements like?

Students may not arrange their own placements.

Education Studies partners with school districts throughout San Diego County, with a focus on schools that serve students historically underrepresented in postsecondary education. Placements include urban, suburban, and rural settings, and may be as far as 30 miles from campus. Students can share where they live, and the program will try to place them within a reasonable geographic area.

Students are placed in both public and charter school settings. Program lecturers and supervisors are experienced educators with strong ties to local schools.

Can I work while in the program?

Because the programs are full-time and intensive, working during the program is not recommended.
