Ruby Osoria

Ruby Osoria is a Ph.D. Candidate in Education Studies at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). As a first-generation college student, Ruby’s research interests are informed by her position as a daughter of Mexican immigrants and furthered by her employment and volunteer experience. While in high school and undergraduate, Ruby participated in community organizing through El Centro Cultural de Mexico, serving a predominantly Latinx immigrant community. As a master’s student, she worked for the City of Santa Ana’s Project P.R.I.D.E and The Wooden Floor (Youth Program), serving Latinx students in the K-12 and Latinx families. Her research interest consists of educational pathways and access, immigration, education policy, urban communities, community organization/ non-profit work on educational (in)equalities, community-based social networks, the impact of the urban context on educational opportunities, experiences of Chicanx/Latinx (immigrant) parents and first-generation college students, Chicana feminist epistemology, Latina/o critical race theory, and critical race methodologies.

Project Title: Chicana/o Students Navigating an R1 Institution

Led this study on the academic experiences of first-generation Chicana/o undergraduate students at a four-year institution. The study analyzed the perception of campus climate by Chicana/o undergraduate students and forms of academic retention, from 2011 to 2012. Developed interview protocol, recruited participants, conducted participant interviews, transcribed data, coded, and analyzed data.
