James Crawford

James Crawford is a Ph.D. student in Education Studies at UC San Diego. James earned an M.A. degree in the Social and Cultural Analysis of Education graduate program at California State University, Long Beach, and a B.A. degree in Philosophy with a minor in Psychology from California State University, Dominguez Hills. He holds over 10 years of experience in education consulting, restorative practices, and capacity-building to center the voices and academic achievement of racially and socioeconomically diverse student groups. Currently, James is the Graduate Researcher for the UCSD Black Studies Project, a board member of the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association (BGPSA), and he also serves on the Black Student Experience Symposium Committee. James is a published scholar with research interests including critical race methodologies, Black critical theory, critical media literacy, and school-community partnerships that utilize culturally responsive pedagogies and curricula to mitigate the impacts of systemic anti-Blackness by cultivating individual and collective resilience, resistance, and empowerment. In addition to supporting educational equity for marginalized student populations, James also has a passion for dancing, fitness, and collaborating on music and video projects.

2021 Computer Science for English Learners (CSforEL)

Increasing Participation and Achievement in Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) for ELs A mixed-methods study designed to support a collaborative equity audit process with principals, counselors, and teachers by identifying challenges and opportunities to promoting access to CS for ELs, and to develop more inclusive school policies and practices.

2019 An Exploration of Black Graduate Student Experiences at UCSD

A qualitative research study focusing on Black graduate student academic trajectories and experiences at UCSD in an effort to enhance the academic supports and campus culture for Black graduate students.

Role: Co-PI - general project development, data collection, data analysis, publications and conference presentations.

2018 Black Foodways in Los Angeles

An interdisciplinary study funded by the UC Consortium for Black Studies documenting and analyzing the historical and contemporary place-making of Black-owned foodways in Los Angeles communities.

Role: Graduate Student Researcher - archival research, organization and analysis of data, and presentation of findings.

2017-2018 Ethnic Studies Pilot Study

A qualitative study of an Ethnic Studies pilot course at a local San Diego High School evaluating three areas of growth/change in ninth grade students who matriculate through the course: performance, mindset, and critical understanding. This study has been instrumental in the ongoing grassroots efforts in San Diego and recent SDUSD school board decision that has led to a district-wide Ethnic Studies graduation requirement.
