Profile
Nora Turriago is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California, San Diego, where she is a recipient of the Cota Robles Fellowship. Nora’s commitment to social justice and educational equity is reflective in both her research and teaching. At UCSD, she has been involved in research focusing on leaders at the state, district, and school level in fostering educational equity for multilingual learners. Nora's dissertation explores how district and school leaders implement Dual Language Immersion (DLI) and Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) programs in Massachusetts after the LOOK Act, with a focus on how these decisions enable or constrain equitable access for multilingual learners. Her dissertation study is supported by funding from the Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research. Nora also enjoys teaching undergraduate courses, as she believes in the power of education to empower students—particularly from marginalized communities—to ultimately transform systems of injustice. In recognition of her teaching, Nora received an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Scholar Award, one of only six students across campus to receive this honor.
Nora is a graduate of Smith College and holds a Master’s degree in Bilingual, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Multicultural Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She previously worked as an English Language Learner (ELL) teacher at a public elementary school in Massachusetts. To learn more about Nora and her research, visit noraturriago.com
