Brittany Kaplan

Brittany is a PhD student in Education Studies who is interested in language acquisition and deprivation in d/Deaf children and bilingual-bicultural education. Prior to starting at UCSD, Brittany served as an AmeriCorps member and Senior AmeriCorps member with City Year Philadelphia providing individual and whole school support to help high school students succeed in school. Brittany’s classroom experience also includes work in early intervention, pre-school, and kindergarten at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. Brittany’s past research experience has included projects in teacher-student interaction, educational neuroscience, psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, and clinical psychology. These experiences led Brittany to receive an MA in Deaf Education Studies from Gallaudet University in 2021, where Brittany presented a master’s thesis examining the general education teacher’s role in supporting deaf students who have experienced language deprivation. Previously, Brittany received a BA in Psychology with a minor in ASL and Deaf Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. Current research interests include innovative pedagogy for classroom teaching and teacher training both in support of students who have experienced language deprivation.
