Rogelio Becerra Songolo

Rogelio Becerra Songolo (he/him/his/el) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Education Studies at UC San Diego. He emigrated from Guadalajara, Mexico at the age of 11 so he thoroughly understands the obstacles that immigrant families experience while attempting to access quality education. Rogelio received his bachelor’s degree in French from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013, and went on to earn his master’s degree in educational leadership from DePaul University in 2016. Aside from working in higher education for the past eight years, Rogelio has partnered as a consultant with companies throughout the world to provide diversity and inclusion workshops. While working with students and families in Madison, WI, Chicago and San Diego, Rogelio has seen the various ways in which educational systems have failed students of color. Thus, his current research interests revolve around analyzing the paradigms that either foster or hinder cognitive growth for students at a young age. Rogelio is eager to explore how it is that parents, community organizations and schools can work together to address the opportunity gap so pervasive among communities of color. On his down time, Rogelio enjoys spending time with his partner Tosha, his pup Tatu, and playing soccer at the local rec. league.
