Lisa Matsukata

Lisa Matsukata is a Ph.D. student in Education Studies at UC San Diego. She earned her B.A. in Cognitive Science from Occidental College and M.A. in Educational Studies from Johns Hopkins University. Born and raised in Honolulu, HI—where many Asian-American cultures are welcomed and celebrated—Lisa has always embraced her cultural background and valued her ability to speak Japanese. She is a strong advocate of language immersion programs and has worked in various educational settings teaching Japanese to both native and non-native speakers. Meanwhile, Lisa has also developed her skill as a middle school math teacher in both Hawaii and California. As a Ph.D. student in Education Studies at UC San Diego, she hopes to focus her research in bilingual education and English Learner policy and program evaluation. Outside of school, Lisa enjoys going to the beach, hiking, and weightlifting.
