Bilingual Authorization Program (BLA)
Bilingual Authorization Program for Concurrent M.Ed./Credential Candidates
The Education Studies Department at UCSD offers a Bilingual Authorization Program (BLA) for current graduate students in the M.Ed./Credential Program (Multiple or Single Subject), and wish to teach in bilingual settings for the following languages: Spanish, Arabic, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Tagalog (Filipino), or Vietnamese.
Eligible students will take additional EDS courses during the Professional Preparation Program. The Bilingual Authorization is added to the teaching credential upon completion of the M.Ed/Credential Program or within 5 years from the time students were recommended for the teaching credential at the Education Studies Department, UCSD. Please note that the BLA Program is only offered to current M.Ed./Credential Program Students.
Candidates interested in being recommended for the Bilingual Authorization Program in Spanish must demonstrate:
- Methodological Competence: EDS 125 (4 units), History, Politics & Theory of Bilingual Education, and EDS 352 A B (2-2 units), Bilingual Instructional Practices.
- Cultural Competence: Program (History & Culture, with EDS courses), OR CSET: LOTE Subtest V in the culture of emphasis.
- Language Competence: Meet Standard on Program Language Assessment, OR CSET: LOTE Subtest III.
- A desire to teach in a bilingual setting.
Candidates interested in being recommended for any of these BLA Programs in Asian & Middle Eastern Languages (Arabic, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Tagalog (Filipino), and Vietnamese) must demonstrate:
- Methodological Competence: EDS 125 (4 units), History, Politics & Theory of Bilingual Education and EDS 352 A B (2-2 units), Bilingual Instructional Practices.
- Cultural Competence: Program (History & Culture classes, along with EDS courses), OR CSET: LOTE Subtest V in the culture of emphasis.
- Language Competence: CSET: LOTE for each language as follows: Arabic and Filipino: Subtest II. For Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Vietnamese: Subtest III
- A desire to teach in a bilingual setting.
Information Sessions are included as part of the orientations for incoming graduate students into the M.Ed./Credential Programs.
