PRACTICE AND RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Thanks to all 2018 EDS/CREATE Teaching and Learning conference presenters and participants! We appreciate your joining us for a day of learning, inspiration, and connection. Check CREATE’s website for a blog post about the day!

EDS Baking Celebration Exhibition

The multiple-subjects credential students in Caren Holtzman's arts methods class had a sweet assignment.  In order to experience project-based learning and integrating the arts across the curriculum, the students worked in groups to plan, design, and bake a cake, bread or pie that connected to some area of the elementary curriculum.  The clever and artistic EDS baking teams created a range of delicious projects. Their pies and cakes focused on subjects across the elementary curriculum including migration and mapping, ecology, science, history, math, archaeology, and more.  The exhibition day was met with enthusiasm and appreciation by all who attended and tasted.

New Vista Education Center Asks ‘How Can We Help Kids Learn?’

Alan Daly of Education Studies at UC San Diego is helping to lead the charge on the importance of connecting research and practice.  Dr. Daly along with several teachers from Vista Unified School District and other researchers from UC San Diego are teaming up to better understand how children learn. The project – the International Center for Educational Research and Practice, a new “virtual center” at the district – also includes the San Diego Workforce Partnership, which will help educators prepare students for jobs that may not exist yet.

Understanding and Supporting the Educational Needs of Recently Arrived Immigrant English Learner Students: Lessons for State and Local Education Agencies

Megan Hopkins recently co-authored and published a fantastic piece about the needs of recently arrived immigrant English learner students that was published by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).  Dr. Hopkins’ research seeks to identify, understand, and improve the education of immigrant students who have recently arrived in the U.S. The authors also acknowledged EDS Ph.D. students Peter Bjorklund Jr. and Hayley Weddle for providing “excellent research assistance”.

Cesar Chavez Poetry Club 2018 Anthology
In her fifth year volunteering at Cesar Chavez Middle School in Oceanside, Susan Scharton guided students in the Chavez Poetry Club to publish the Cesar Chavez Poetry Club 2018 Anthology (Amazon, $6), a compilation of poems written by middle school students.  Professor Scharton shared with us about her 2017 anthology, "Writing has been a therapeutic way for me [to think] through my thoughts and feelings. It was particularly important to me as a middle schooler so I am hoping to help these middle school students benefit from exploring this mode of expression. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and working with younger students helps to continue to hone my teaching chops and give me stories to share with our M.Ed. students."

Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity - Teacher Learning through Noticing and Reflection

Under the supervision of Sherice Clarke, the postdoctoral fellow will participate in a longitudinal study of teacher learning. This project is a partnership between practitioners, learning scientists, cognitive scientists, and computer scientists – to study how teachers learn to facilitate classroom discussion though noticing and reflecting on their practice.

Make Your Summer Matter: Become a Summer Equity Fellow

Make your summer matter as you develop knowledge and skills in the fight for equal opportunity for all San Diego children. Summer Equity Fellows help ensure that children attending public schools in southeast San Diego receive the support they require both inside and outside of school in order to read proficiently by the end of third grade.

P@L students volunteered at Chicano Park Day

Every year the Chicano Park Steering Committee organizes an All Ages Art Workshop to ensure that kids visiting Chicano Park Day are able to participate in the festivities. Under the leadership of muralist Victor Ochoa, artist Giovanni (MEX) Cerda, and Grossmont College Art Professor Jennifer Bennett, college students and community volunteers facilitate arts and crafts projects for children of all ages throughout the day. We thank our P@L students for representing EDS at Chicano Park every year!

Read Angela Censoplano HolmesLife is a Classroom

Many students encounter daily perils, including poverty, violence, and homelessness—realities that jeopardize their existence and shape their life experiences, while also shaping the lives of the teachers and adults around them. This book captures their playful purity and joy while offering us a unique viewpoint to observe and cope with our sometimes challenging lives, and to lean on joy and humor whenever possible.
