The University of California San Diego Noyce Program enhances secondary mathematics and science teaching in San Diego County public K–12 schools and beyond.
The program includes a STEM teacher candidate scholarship as well as a Master Teacher Fellowship program. The scholarship provides 1–2 years of financial support for aspiring secondary STEM teachers enrolled in the teacher education program at UCSD. The Master Teacher Fellowship provides support and learning opportunities for classroom teachers seeking to have an impact on public education.
The program focuses on the education of students in high-needs school districts within a collaborative community.
The University of California San Diego Education Studies Noyce Scholarship Program enhances secondary mathematics and science teaching in San Diego County public K-12 schools and beyond. The program recruits high achieving STEM majors from the UCSD undergraduate degrees of mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, geoscience, and management sciences. Up to 16 scholarships will be awarded each year. The scholarship program is embedded within UCSD's CalTeach program.
Activities focus on three areas: recruitment, support and retention. This program seeks to recruit the best and the brightest from our STEM majors. Once in the program you will be nurtured within a close cohort based experience as you learn the art and science of teaching. All CalTeach paticipants engage in extensive K-12 classroom experiences under the mentorship of outstanding veteran teachers. Once our scholars graduate and take charge of their own classrooms, they return to the CalTeach program as mentors and advisors for our new participants.
National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program (NSF 0934223)
The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The program provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and academic programs for undergraduate STEM majors and post-baccalaureate students holding STEM degrees who commit to teaching in high-need K-12 school district.
To apply for the program you must meet the following requirements:
- Enrolled at the University of California San Diego.
- Majoring in, or have majored in a field of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (i.e. STEM majors). One could be majoring in, or have majored in, any major in one of the Engineering Departments, the Mathematics Department, the Physics Department, the Chemistry-Biochemistry Department, or the Biology Department or be majoring in, or have majored in Earth Sciences or Environmental Systems.
- Selected an academic major that will serve as a teaching specialization in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geoscience, Earth Science, or Mathematics. If selected you need to have completed subject matter requirements prior to receiving the scholarship.
- Enrolled in UCSD CalTeach SMI minor; Minor in Mathematics Education or Minor in Science Education
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Senior undergraduate student or graduate student standing
- Awardees must pursue an academic major in a STEM field as described above (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, or earth science) that will serve as their teaching specialization in grades 6 through 12.
- Teach for a minimum of two years for each year of scholarship support in a “high-need” school or school district. Scholarship funds must be repaid if the Noyce Scholar does not complete the teaching requirement.
- Attend full time and complete your bachelor’s degree by the end of one academic year (if you are in your senior year).
- Completion of the UCSD Noyce Scholarship agreement.
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.
UCSD was awarded the Robert Noyce Master Teacher Fellowship grant through the National Science Foundation (NSF 1136369) in October 2011. This program is designed to give teachers the skills, commitment, and professional support they need to continue teaching in urban schools. The program is a partnership between the Division of Physical Sciences, UCSD CalTeach Education minor, and the Department of Education Studies. The overarching goal of this program is to provide local mathematics and science teachers with the training, support, and professional development to be educational leaders within their schools and school district. We want to support strong leadership and pedagogy within high-needs urban schools.
Our selected mathematics and science teachers engage in professional development activities over the five-year period of this program. MTF teachers receive mentoring opportunities, summer institute experiences, ongoing online courses, graduate coursework and credits, and a $10,000 annual salary supplement dispersed in two installments over the 5-year program. In selecting our Noyce Master Teacher Fellows, we searched for a variety of teachers who wanted to increase their personal professional development. Our Master Teacher Fellows were selected from three groups; teachers with 3-4 years of classroom experience, teachers with 5-10 years of classroom experience, and those teachers with more than 10 years of classroom experience.
Professional Development and Leadership Program
The program includes several components that work in unison to support educational leadership qualities for dedicated STEM teachers. These components include:
- Leadership and mentoring skill training, once during the 5-year program (this will be a two-week online course)
- Specific content and pedagogical based summer institutes, twice during the 5-year program (typically a three-week blended course with FTF and online components)
- Targeted online courses aimed at specific skills for the teacher leader at least twice during the 5-year program (these are typically 8-week online courses)
- Participation in an online professional network through mobile computing (iPad2)
- Mini-grants for classroom intervention and support
- Mentoring opportunities hosting UCSD CalTeach classroom tutors, apprentice teachers, and/or EDS credential program student teachers
Compensation to participating Master Teacher Fellows:
- Salary supplement of $10,000 per year of the program dispersed in two installments each year
- Mobile computing devices to support online community (iPad 2)
- Receiving graduate units for leadership training, summer institutes, and online courses (up to 16 quarter units)
