Anita Raj, PhD, is a Professor of Medicine and Global Public Health, a Professor of Education Studies in the Division of Social Sciences, and the Director of UC San Diego's Center on Gender Equity and Health. Trained as a developmental psychologist, Dr. Raj’s research includes epidemiologic and qualitative assessment of gendered, social, and cultural vulnerabilities for reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child, and adolescent health (RMNCH+A) concerns across national settings; assessment of the etiology and public health impact of gender inequities including early and child marriage, intimate partner violence and sexual assault, and son preference; development and evaluation of HIV, unintended pregnancy, and gender-based violence prevention interventions in low resource settings and with socially vulnerable populations including as minorities, people contending with problem substance use, and youth; and application of social and behavioral theories, including gender theories, for measurement development and evaluation research. Through this research, conducted in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Russia and North America, she has generated approximately 200 publications, and has been invited to speak at the United Nations General Assembly, the World Health Organization, UN Women, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on topics of gender inequities and health. Over the course of her career, she has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on more than 50 separate grants from various federal funding agencies [NIMH, NICHD, NIDA, NIAAA; CDC; SAMHSA; the Office of Minority Health], foundations [the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation], Kaiser Permanente’s Community Benefits and UNICEF. In addition to her research, she is committed to community service toward the prevention of violence against women. She serves as a Board Member for Center for Community Solutions, San Diego’s largest rape crisis center and domestic violence shelter, and works extensively with the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) and RALIANCE, an NFL-funded sport-focused initiative to end violence against women. She is also a Board Member for the United Nations Association of San Diego.
