We recommend all students apply for University Aid (Grants and Loans) by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually. The deadline to apply is March 2nd.  UC San Diego FAFSA code is 001317.

Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Have completed a minimum of 60 semester or 90 quarter units , of post secondary education prior to the fall term.
  • Must have received or is approved to receive educational loans issued through institutions of higher education.
  • Must be in a program leading to a Bachelor’s degree or in a teacher preparation program.
  • Is not in default on a federal student loan or has made satisfactory repayment arrangements.
  • Does not owe money on a federal or state grant, or has made satisfactory repayment arrangements.
  • Must sign an agreement to teach in a designated California public school for up to four full time, or part time equivalent consecutive years after obtaining an initial teaching credential.

Service Commitment:

Requires full-time teaching service as a K-12 public school teacher in California, in either the subject matter shortage area or the designated school type identified.

Award Amount:

Up to $19,000 in loan assumption possible.

Noyce Scholarship

EDS in partnership with the UC San Diego Physical Sciences Division has available the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant from the National Science Foundation.

The program will provide a $12,000 Noyce scholarship to approximately 16 mathematics, chemistry, physics, and geoscience majors annually in UC San Diego's EDS undergraduate minor and graduate intern credential program. Recipients will be required to commit to serving two-years as a secondary mathematics or science teacher in a high-need school.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Enrolled at the University of California San Diego.

  • Majoring in, or have majored in a field of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (i.e. STEM majors). One could be majoring in, or have majored in, any major in one of the Engineering Departments, the Mathematics Department, the Physics Department, the Chemistry-Biochemistry Department, or the Biology Department or be majoring in, or have majored in Earth Sciences or Environmental Systems.

  • Selected an academic major that will serve as a teaching specialization in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geoscience, Earth Science, or Mathematics. If selected you need to have completed subject matter requirements prior to receiving the scholarship (see EDS student advisors for details on subject matter requirements).

  • Enrolled in EDS's Minor in Mathematics Education or Science Education or STEM Major at UC San Diego.  Students in our Secondary Mathematics or Science Credential/M.Ed program are also eligible.

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0.

  • Undergraduate Student with Senior Standing or Graduate Student Standing

Commitment:

  • Awardees must pursue an academic major in a STEM field as described above (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, or earth science) that will serve as their teaching specialization in grades 6 through 12.

  • Teach for a minimum of two years for each year of scholarship support in a "high-need" school. Scholarship monies must be returned if the Noyce Scholar does not complete the teaching requirement.

The funds can be disbursed as early as Winter quarter, and you do NOT need to demonstrate financial need to qualify.

You should only consider this program if you are planning to enter a teaching credential program immediately upon graduation or are currently in the credential program.

  • Current UCSD MfA Fellow are not eligible for this scholarship.

  • Please note that if you do not complete the two year teaching requirement, the grant must be repaid to UC San Diego.

Teach Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

Student Eligibility:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), although you do not have to demonstrate financial need.

  • Have and maintain a UC San Diego cumulative Undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or above

  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student

  • Be enrolled in coursework that is necessary to begin a career in teaching or plan to complete such course work.

  • Willingness to teach for 4 of your first 8 years in a designated low-income school

  • More than half of your time teaching during each year must be in a high need field: Math, science, foreign language, bilingual education, English language acquisition, special education, or reading specialist.

Conditions:


In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a
full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students.

  • As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant. IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) was disbursed. Note: TEACH Grant recipients will be given a 6-month grace period prior to entering repayment if a TEACH Grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.

You should only consider this program if you are planning to enter a teaching credential program immediately upon graduation. You can then apply for additional funds ($4000) for your year in the credential program.

Math for America

Plan to enter a graduate credential program at one of the three MƒA SD partner universities (California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM), San Diego State University (SDSU), or the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)). Applicants are responsible for their own application and acceptance to their university of choice.

Please check the Math for America website for eligibility requirements and updated deadline information.

Noyce Scholarship Recipients are NOT Eligible for this award.

Award Amount:

A 5 year fellowship beginning when you enter the UC San Diego Education Studies credential program and continues through your first years of teaching. Participants receive tuition for their credentail coursework, a $15,000 per year stipend (in addition to salary), customized professional development, a mentor teacher, and access to a professional community of mathematicians and math teachers.
